No titles, just the logline
In the Movie Time Machine you never see the title, only a one-line synopsis like "A lonely boy secretly shelters a small stranded visitor from another world." Across eight eras from 1980 to 2019, you choose which of three projects to back each round, and the results are settled with each film's real performance after release. You start with $10,000.
You'll meet films that sounded like blockbusters and bombed, micro-budget films that became worldwide hits, and critics' favorites that barely made money in theaters.

Real hits and flops
- Jackpots: a 1982 family film about an alien, made for about $10.5 million, earned about $790 million worldwide. A 1999 found-footage horror film that cost about $600,000 earned about $248 million, more than 400 times its budget.
- Expensive hits: a 1997 disaster romance with a $200 million budget and a 2009 sci-fi epic that cost $237 million earned more than $2.2 billion and $2.9 billion, yet as multiples that's only about 11–12x.
- Bombs: a 1980 western that cost $44 million earned only about $3.5 million and shook its studio, and a 2012 sci-fi adventure that cost more than $260 million barely earned back its budget.
- The masterpiece trap: a 1994 prison drama now on countless all-time-favorite lists earned only a little more than its budget in its original theatrical run.
How the game calculates, and its limits
The game multiplies what you invest by worldwide theatrical gross divided by production budget. In reality, investors don't receive the full box office: theaters and distributors take their share, and marketing costs and deal terms cut real profits a lot. So treat the multiple as a way to compare how big a hit a film was relative to its budget. The fun is discovering that the most famous films and the biggest multiples aren't always the same.
